This crochet flower coaster has such a soft, pretty look with its layered petals and gentle scalloped edge. I designed it by following the diagram step by step and testing it with the actual piece, so the photo, chart, and written pattern all come together in the same shape and structure.
It’s a lovely project if you’re practicing working in the round, and also a fun, relaxing make if you already enjoy decorative crochet. Using cotton yarn gives it a nice sturdy feel, making it perfect for everyday use while still looking delicate and handmade.

Crochet Instructions
Round 1 : Center (Color A)

Make a magic ring.

Round 2 : Base Round (Color B)

Step-by-step:

Slip stitch into the nearest ch-2 space.

Make first petal
In the same space, work:
ch 3, 2 tr, ch 2, 3 tr

Go to the next space
Move directly to the next ch-2 space
(do NOT skip any spaces)

In that space, work again:
ch 3, 2 tr, ch 2, 3 tr

Keep making one petal in every ch-2 space

Slip stitch to the top of the first ch-3
Result: 16 small petal shells.
You should have one petal in each ch-2 space.
Fasten off if changing color.
Round 4 : Outer Scalloped Petals (Color C)
1. Join Color C in the ch-2 space of any petal.
2. In the same space, work:
ch 3, 7 tr
3. Slip stitch into the next petal’s ch-2 space.
4. Repeat in each petal around.
5. Join with sl st and fasten off.
Total: 16 scalloped petals
Finishing

Weave in all yarn ends securely.

I followed this pattern exactly as written with bernat handicrafter cotton on size 4mm hook. It was way too many petals, it curled in unto itself. I had 16 petals as suggested.

Curling is often caused by tension, yarn choice, or the number of stitches worked into each petal, but I’d like to double-check the pattern as well. Could you let me know which round the curling started on, or share a photo of your coaster? That will help me figure out what’s happening and update the instructions if needed.
I think the issue that Sylvia may have run into came from a typo in the written pattern for the third round. Per the written pattern; “ch 3, 2 tr, ch 2, 3 tr”; is the repeat. But looking at the stitch map the repeat is; “2 tr, ch 2, 2 tr”.
I’m currently running into the same problem with too many stitches causing the petals to over lap and curl.

Your chart shows 20 double crochets into the magic ring but your pattern says 16. I had the same problem as above, perhaps the pattern reads wrong?
